Change Detection of Lake Chad Water Surface Area Using Remote Sensing and Satellite Imagery

چکیده

The Lake Chad located in the west-central Africa Sahel region at edge of Sahara experienced severe drought during 1970s and 1980s overexploitation (unintegrated unsustainable use), which is a result variant land uses water management practices last 50 years. This resulted decline level surrounding rivers. present study analyzed satellite images from Landsat-MSS, Landsat-OLI to investigate change open surface area years 1973, 1987, 2001, 2013, 2017. Supervised classifications were performed for cover analysis. 1973 was covering 16,157.34 km2 approximately, that 64.6% total lake 1960s. As an ultimate extreme witnessed through 1970s-1980s, has decreased 1831.44 km2, i.e. around 11.33%, compared 1973. dilemma suffering believed be catastrophic complication aforementioned crisis, arose as climate change, global warming, unintegrated use challenges still encountering.

Lake Chad Total Surface Water Area as Derived from Land Surface Temperature and Radar Remote Sensing Data

Lake Chad, located in the middle of the African Sahel belt, underwent dramatic decreases in the 1970s and 1980s leaving less than ten percent of its 1960s surface water extent as open water. In this paper, we present an extended record (dry seasons 1988–2016) of the total surface water area of the lake (including both open water and flooded vegetation) derived using Land Surface Temperature (LS...

Regional assessment of lake water clarity using satellite remote sensing

Lake water clarity as measured by Secchi disk transparency (SDT) is a cost-effective measure of water quality. However, in regions where there are thousands of lakes, sampling even a small proportion of those lakes for SDT year after year is cost prohibitive. Remote sensing has the potential to be a powerful tool for assessing lake clarity over large spatial scales. The overall objective of our...

assessment of land-cover change in South part of Lake Urmia using satellite imagery

Study of land use/cover changes is widely used in environmental planning. During the last decade, growing increase of aridity in Uromiyah Basin has become a major regional and even national problem. The purpose of this study is to reveal the changes in land use/cover in the southern and southeastern parts of the basin with using 2 images for month of July of 2000 to 2017. Landsat TM and OLI dat...

Land cover land use mapping and change detection analysis using geographic information system and remote sensing

Land cover/land use categories are relevant components in land management. Understanding how land cover/land use change over time is necessary to assess the consequences of humans and natural stressors on the earth’s environment and resources. The aim of the study was to map and monitor the spatial and temporal change in land cover/land use for the periods of 1977, 1991 and 2016 and to predict ...

Remote sensing of vegetation water content from equivalent water thickness using satellite imagery

Vegetation water content (VWC) is one of the most important parameters for the successful retrieval of soil moisture content from microwave data. Normalized Difference Infrared Index (NDII) is a widely-used index to remotely sense Equivalent Water Thickness (EWT) of leaves and canopies; however, the amount of water in the foliage is a small part of total VWC. Sites of corn (Zea mays), soybean (...
